trying to make a small powder horn ball carrier.How to make spring ball dispence

I had this small old cowhorn that was dying to be useful. I decided to make a cowhorn ball dispencer but cannot figure out how to make a hidden button to drop ball one at a time.....anybody with info on this would be wonderful help.....thanks........sonny

What about a sliding plate with a hole in it sandwhiched between two plates and spring loaded so when you push down a lever it lines up the holes.  Other option would be a circular plate with a hole in it that could line up like on the old pulverins.

    Why not just start cutting the tip off until a ball will roll out, put a base in it and a wooden plug to seal it up.
 Another way would be once you have the tip cut to proper size cut a hole perpendicular to the opening about 1 /2” down or so. Make a plug with a hole drilled in it so a ball will roll through and centered so one way it is closed and the other open. You can put a little knob on one side and a pin on the other side to keep it in place. Make it tight to start and it will work in with use. Will take  little playing with but will work.

I've got a flat ball horn that just uses a wood plug like a powder horn. There is a wooden divider inside the horn and a sliding cover in the base to carry and dispense caps.

I took a flat horn and cut a long V-shaped beak for a pour spout. I filed the beak to hold the ball near the tip of the beak.  When "tuned" with a file, it will hold a ball in the beak and still allow you to pull out one ball at a time.  When you remove one ball, another drops to take its place. No stopper is needed. 

I hang it with the beak down.  The last ball horn I made will hold enough for a woodswalk. When I get back home, I'll post a pic.  It's not PC, but it is handy.

pletch.............I have the horn carved with a crow head beak spread an open. I would like to tip the beak down a let one ball nested between is beak. I think a small retainer notch to hold the ball but not let it roll out except when pulled out with fingers would be the nutts. I am sure that the alls inside a horn would rattle but for woodswalk target shooting it would be capital....thanks....lov to see what you have completed with this idea......thks......sonny

I'm sorry to reply so late.  I was away from my office computer and didn't have the means to get to photobucket.  Below is a photo of my woods walk gear.  In the center is the ball horn I mentioned.



Hanging like that, I grab the ball nearest the beak and pull it out.  This horn holds 18 .490 balls.  I filed the inside of the beak to allow a ball to be held even with the weight of the remaining balls above it.  If you file too much away, I've found .490s on the floor under the horn.  If that happens, heat the beak and pinch them together a little.

pletch,......that's basically what I have but a crow head in black. I must get some oil to heat up the beak an spread apart to get ball to drop close to tip. I really like the look of a beak dispencer an although I can imagine it would make noise when you walk, I have yet to lose any points in a woodswalk for having too much noise with loading....sonny
