A new open top pouch
« on: July 21, 2013, 10:06:54 PM »
If you recall I showed two antique powder horns that required some attention.  As a result I finally made a new butt plug for the first horn I showed in 'A tale of two horns', http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=26669.0
Wood pegs, small brads and a tack were used for installation and I luckily managed to install and 'age' the butt plug without disturbing the existing patina on the horn.

Upon completing that repair I had to make a pouch that seemed appropriate for both the horn style along with its' acquired patina.  I started out with an idea brought upon reading Jim Webb's book, "Sketches of Hunting Pouches, Powder Horns and Accouterments of Southern Appalachia".  Although this pouch started out simple enough until I accidently spilled some 'vinegaroon' on the front.  Oh well, at least it looks grummy enough for this 'new' powder horn.
This is basically one piece of veg tan 2-3 oz leather, sewn up using hemp and there is even a small inside hanging pocket for whatever.   Dimensions are about 7 1/2 wide by 7 high.  I added a button to the top and using a leather piece attached to the back then flipped over to close using the button.   After braiding some hemp cord for the strap it was then just a manner for using some more hemp cord to attach the powder horn to the strap.  Voila.  A small simple hunting pouch for that first days' hunt for those rascally tree rats.

Yes, very good looking. I like the accidental spill look and the braided strap is a great addition. Nice job on the horn restoration.

Gary, that horn looks for all the world like it's made of curly maple!

Thanks guys for the fine comments and Kermit, sort of does look like curly maple now that you mention it.  Between the growth rings, scraper marks and the patina you have a nice looking color and I had nothing to do with it.
Tim, the problem with 'accidental spillings' is your first instinct is to 'fix' it.  Well, I took the route to add even more to try to even out the color variations.  I'm not happy with it, but I couldn't stand to leave as is either.  I'm mulling making another to replace this one only this time to make the color variations more subtle.   ;D  Now where did I put that pattern?

Gary.... That's a beautiful pouch, one I have been wanting to make but just haven't had the time to do so. I would say there were a lot more of these around than what we find surviving today as they could be used for more than just a shot pouch. Keep up the good work and thanks for posting/sharing your pouches.  Kind Regards  Frank

That's a very attractive set Gary. I like the effect on the horn and as far as the bag, I've never seen anything where the patina was really uniform. Life is what happens when you least expect it!
