Head gunsmith at Ohio Village for over 10 years, Mike Lea is an accomplished artist and gunbuilder.
Each student will receive a workbook, textbook and set of basic tools that are theirs to keep. The basic "how to's" of metal engraving will be covered starting with learning and understanding how to make, grind and use metal cutting gravers. Correct cutting angles and the manipulation of tools will be stressed and demonstrated on a variety of metals. Layout and transfer techniques will be geared to the non-artist. Some basic lettering will be covered but will not be the main focus. The history of mental engraving on antique American and European firearms will be discussed with some examples available for study.
