Avlrc sent these (below) to me and I converted them to .jpg so they could be put into our forum. Thanks Avlrc, great information.

Dennis ,

here is some records ( see attachments) of evidence in a court case between John Sheets Gunsmith from Staunton VA & his apprentice John Beeton. I think the records date from 1814. I think the case was 1815. Some of the ALR members may like to see them. I can't figure how to put them in a post. I like the phrase "Stalking a gun"  These came from:

These are good records when researching.

There were not standardized spellings then and people spelled phonetically the way they said the word.    "Stalking" would seem to be how they said "stocking".    It really sounds like a British accent.    Notice that "repairing" is spelled "repearing".  Those were the spellings of it would seem John Beaton.    John Sheets spelled "repairs" as we would.

What about his "freedom dues" bottom of first sheet, and top of second?
Were we still using English Pounds in 1814?

Thanks for posting this fascinating look at the relationship between two excellent Virginia gunsmiths.  It was, after all, a business for profit in which they engaged.
