I used my .54 at the time, but it was what I had.  I shot over the back of the one turkey I shot at, which caused all ten of them to fly up in trees and all stare down at me, until I started to reload, then they all flew away.
Go with the .40.

When in doubt, whomp 'em. Being under-gunned is like being under-dressed...UNcomfortable.

You may want to check out some of the bowhunter turkey forums for shot placement.  Many people make the mistake of shooting too far forward.

10ga with a jug choke.  Don't even have to call them that close.

Ramrod   I wish Ind would let us use small bore rifles.A40 cal  under 25 yards would be my choice. Shot placement would be most important. I have a 20 Colerain turkey choke barrel on a smooth rifle that does quick work on Mr gobbler .I have a rear sight also because they throw a very tight pattern. You have had good advice from members so far with a lot of options. The good part about the Colrain barrel is they are easy to find a good load for, they seem to shoot anything within reason.Iwould still choose a 40 though cause I just like rifles over smooth guns.Just my opinion.
