I've used the flame of a propane torch, turned way down, to scorch the wood. I've also painted them on using a small paint brush and india ink - then stained over. Similar to the way faux stripes were added to Leman stocks. I prefer the latter technique. With a little practice, the effect looks quite natural. I have since stopped applying stripes to my ramrods.

I have done this several ways.

1.  first way long ago, soaked a length of cotton string in kerosene, wrapped around the rod and set it on fire.  Interesting results.
2.  wrapped a length of bailing twine around the rod and used a propane torch down low to char the spaces between the twine.  Better results.
3. wrapped tape around the rod and stained with a darker stain, removed the tape.

I seldom go through the trouble anymore.

What satwel said goes for me too.

maybe you've seen these (four results, including this thread) i searched "strip" and "rod" (without quotes) AND selected "search titles only".

It helps narrow things down quite a bit-searching titles (helps too if folks write good titles with keywords spelled good).

"strip" because that will pick up "stripe", "striping", "stripping", "strippers", etc.
and "rod" gets all words containing "rod"

In the olden days forums defaulted to title searches only, but these here days nearly all forums default to search entire posts-which tends to yield scads of irrelevant postings. So i always try the title only search first, then do the full thread search if that doesn't work.

/search lesson   ;)

The best way is to do it either way satwel or KentSmith does,
Then sand it all off.
Striping on ramrod makes it look like it belongs in a Candy store or a Barber shop,

Striped ramrods were popular about the same time as bell bottoms and platform shoes. Unless you wear those while shooting don't bother with stripes. Just hit the rod with some dark leather stain and finish normally.

I love striped ramrods....I do them very simply, take a piece of alum foil, fold it to the width of the non striped area on the ramrod and wrap the rod in a circular manner like a barber pole. Use a heat gun and heat the ramrod until you reach the desired color. A few experiments are probably a good idea.
Do what you like and don't worry one bit about other opinions, we used to say "It just don't matter" and it doesn't

I like this, will add that in the late 60's some of us car and bike nuts were using cheap lace fabric to do custom painting on our rides. The striped ramrods kinda reminds me of this, without the flashbacks-PBR induced,of course.

Anyway,I have seen several late percussion rifles,Ohio and West Virginia,by recognized makers, that are definatly striped. It is attractive to me on especially plain walnut stocked guns,as the new rifle is.
As an additional bit of info for all y'all western fellers-In the Baird Hawken rifles, mtn mans Choice, pps vi,vii, the racked collection,it Appears that several of our beloved Hawkens have the rods striped.
I appreciate the helpers, and can only hope I will be as amusing as you other fellers.Best regards,Dave

Don, Speaking of an inlet coin, I was at a gun show earlier this year and a guy had an old iron mounted percussion rifle on his table with an 1830's large cent inlet into the right side of the buttstock. He said HE put the coin there to cover up an ugly hole somebody had made in the stock. Said the hole was full of old grease or something.  ???  And, no, it didn't have a striped ramrod, but I'll suggest it if I see him again.
