Patent breach for Hawken full stock
« on: October 07, 2013, 09:58:47 AM »
Does anyone know if there is a patent breach available for a 1" barrel for a full stock Hawken.  Looking for a patent breach that is not of the hook type but is one piece with long tang.

Track of the Wolf has a Hawken patent breech, 1" octagon, 3/4-16 thread
PLUG-PAT-16-3 , it has a short tang but you might be able to cut and solder a long tang from a hooked breech on it. Troy

Yes, they exist.  I built just such a rifle for Dan in Alaska from Stith parts.  And here is one built by Neill Fields of Vernal about a year ago.  It was for Joe who supplied the parts.  He has had them for a long time but I don't know where he got them or if they are still available.

Just a note: the TOTW breech is a late (post 1849) Sam Hawken style. For an earlier style get one from Don Stith if possible or get this one http://www.jedediah-starr.com/closeup.asp?cid=53&pid=1400&offset=2
and either braise or weld the tang to the plug - this style can be documented to the late 1830's and 1840's.....

I have a couple of them on hand and would be willing to part with one

they are the ones that Sharon barrel used in their full stock kits
its a real nice breech with a direct drill flash hole and 6 inch tang
I bought a bunch of them from TOW years ago after Sharon went out of business

I am looking for one like the one drawn on the dust jacket of the Baird Hawken book.  Has anyone seen this type?  The big difference between those available now and that one is the one on the cover has a snail type drum not the curving to the rear cutout.  I hope that explanation is clear enough.  I am not too good at describing things, sometimes.  Bill large made them back in the mid seventies when I was heavy into Hawken making.

Ed that drawing is of the Dunham fullstock Hawken on which IIRC the breech is one piece so the closest proper breech available today that I know of is the one I linked to above at Jedediah Starr and the Hawken Shoppe offers it as well it's the old Griffith breech which matched their copy of the J & S Hawken lock shown on the original below - I used this one on a build many years ago and welded the tang solid to better match the original

here's a pic of the original rifle from Baird's book

Joe,
Is there enough thickness to the area around the nipple to do some filing and sculpting to make it look a little more like the book cover plug?  Is it set up for a 1" barrel?.  What is the thread?  PM me or email the address in my profile.  I am interested.
