Can anyone tell me how early grease holes were used in muzzleloaders? (more specifically southern guns) I know they have been used in the s. mountain rifles of the 1820-1850 period. Just wanted to know if they date back to the 1700's? Thanks all!!! It really helps to have advice from those more knowledgeable. ;D ;D

If you look in the Encyclopedia of the American Revolution, by Neumann and Kravic, you will see at least one gun with a grease hole. Now when that grease hole grew into that guns stock, is anybodies guess. But that sure predates the 1820's by a few years.
