Making a powder flask head from re-purposed parts
« on: September 23, 2013, 10:15:39 PM »
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fRFXOwV768&feature=youtu.be

This is an awareness type link to a short educational video telling about Muzzleloader magazine's upcoming  "Doin' it Yourself" article teaching how you can easily make a simple brass powder flask head from common hardware store parts.

The goal is to eventually make these articles as interactive as we can with additional links to demonstration type videos, tours of historical sites, and anything else that we can think of that relates to the stories theme...

Hi T.C. I loved your article and was wondering if one of the spouts that various vendors sell for flasks would look too much out of place. I think they are made of solid brass so you wouldnt have to worry about cutting through a brass plated fixture. Keep up the good work by the way.

Thanks again...
Yes indeed, one of the commercial brass spout ends would definately work pretty good too, but you know me, I scrounge and repurpose stuff however I can. Sadly someome using similar logic probably explains how the original spouts disappeared from those old flasks long ago...

Track used to offer an excellent Dixon flask head, and it was perfect for Modena type
horns or repairs...sadly those are no longer available.

 T.C.;

  You don't have to buy the whole lamp building kit as you article suggests. There are some really cool lamp parts suppliers on the net. You can buy a whole sack of the parts you need, rather than winding up with a lot of stuff you don't need. Also many of the cheap lamp kits aren't brass, they're plated junk. The lamp parts suppliers will tell you if they are brass, or plated pot metal.
  I often cruise the brass department in the import stores, with an eye for just what you are doing with the hose sprayer. I found some little candlesticks I was able to cut up, and use the bases, for powder flask tops, and some larger ones for the top of a horn inkwell.
 Don't overlook those old brass handled fire sets everybody had hanging by the fireplace when we were kids. The brass handles unscrew, often in sections. I've used a bunch of those for spouts for Russian fur trade round wooden powder flasks.

Great tips hungry Horse...a lamp shop online would be a great place to look for parts too. I'm glad you liked the article.
thanks again,
