WAR & PEACE/ First attempts at Hawks
« on: November 17, 2013, 11:01:44 PM »
Hello all,

Not been around to posting much these day's. If I'm not working, I'm making something.

I've had these two Hand Forged head lying around for a while now, decided to finish them up. These are of my own design, so I call them my contemporary take on an old idea.  Hand forged from some sort of clip like spring found on the Shortline RR which passes through my part of the world.  Slightly engraved  then filled with brass.

Handles are curly maple, shape with a drawknife and files. Gentlemen, if you've never used a drawknife, take it from me. I have a new found respect for the craftsmen of old.

Pretty much the rest is self explanatory.  The War hawk stained with Aqua Fortis and Asphultun as is the Peace hawk.  The only difference is the War hawk is sealed with beeswax, and the Peace hawk with boiled linseed oil that's over sixty year's old.

They may not be pretty, but every journey starts with the first step.

You sure can remove a lot of wood in a hurry with a drawknife eh.  You killed it Rich.
They look great.  I'd carry either one of them any day.
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

Chapple, you have tried many different things over the years and I admire your doggedness and appreciate your need to create. I think you have found your niche, those are really nice and can only get better as you refine your technique, nice job!!!!

Some really nice work on these hawks...like the brass and the pewter inlays.   Congrats, Jim

Before anyone asks  these were drawn, slit and drifted.

And thank you for the kind remarks.  After showing one of these to my grandfather, I found out my g grandfather and gg grandfather were both blacksmiths.

Nice job Rich, hope to see more. The pewter inlay looks good too. I agree with Robby, I think you have found your niche.
