A Frontier still life...
« on: March 25, 2013, 09:48:52 PM »
In 50 years of building knives and hawks this is the first spike hawk I've ever done, but now that I've got the bug so to speak it won't be the last.

This one is in fact a three way collaboration:
1) The iron head with steel bit was forged by mi compadre, the late Gib Guignard
2) The spike was handforged out of iron by another compadre and neighbor Jerry Rodri
3) Assembly, all decorative work, and aging were done by me - deco on the tiger striped maple handle includes: rawhide wraps, brass and iron tacks, brass wire.
The other items:
1) 28ga Smoothbore by Tom Stroh
2) Re-Handled English style scalper - the blade, hand forged by Gib Guignard,  is made of original shear steel. Grip an deco by me
3) Powder Horn - original from SW Virginia area, has two dates scratched into it 1791 and 1825. I re-furbished it by repairing the cracks at the butt with rawhide, added a longer antler tip and the beaded strap.
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Your work always evokes a connection to another time and place- hard to see it without visions of western expanses, horses, and hardened men emerging from the background.

Good to see yer feelin' better Chuck! Beautiful,as usual with your stuff. You have such a distinctive style and "ease of flow" to your work. Even the "simple" sheath you made for me is increadable. That hawk is a fine one! The other stuff used as "window dressing" aint bad either

And your photography is particularly noteworthy too! Love lookin' at 'em!

Chuck.......I have never been a hawk person, but this one is pretty neat.   Same goes for tacks, but they look good on this
one.  I did a gun recently and used some "staples", maybe I'm mellowing out, ha.........Don

You make me want to "cry"--your ART, and it is art in every aspect of the word, is truly amazing. I already want to be born back in the day, but when I see your work, I really want to live in that time period all the more.  Great work is not enough to say, but I am speechless--fantastic job !!!!!!

Does the spike unscrew from a bowl?
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

I'm with PPatch, Wicked is the first thing that came to my mind. Great work and the collection looks good together.
If possible will you post a pic of the horn by itself?

 Thanks, TC

Very nice job, Chuck. I too would be interested in some pictures showing more of the horn.

Thank you everyone for your most kind comments -
Rich - that's one of my main motivations, is to evoke those feelings and luckily from the feedback I get I'm doing a pretty good job

Shreckmeister - the bowl does not unscrew on this one - I would normally forge weld it on, but since the head was made first it would have been difficult at best, so on this one I used a stud through the head and peened/solder it in place. The spike than was force fit over the stud and also soldered in place.

Tim and Elnathan - I'll post pics of the horn later.
