I use mutton tallow. I use a bit brace and go slow and pull the bit and clean the chips out often and haven't had a major run out yet.

Beeswax didn't work for me with with a brace. Crisco works just fine for me though.

I also use bees wax.  I have a cake sitting on my workbench and as the drill bit warms up I hold the cake of bees wax on the tip and let a little bit melt on the drill tip.

Ivory soap works.
If beeswax has ANY sugar in it it will SEIZE UP besides it can heat, soak in and interfere with staining in a worse case.
Adding a little clearance by putting a burr on the edge of the long cut in the rod to free the shaft by a few thousandths.

Otherwise there can be a lot of heat buildup.

What Dan says.  Any bar bath soap works great.  Acer's method works, but he sticks it in his right ear to get wax out of his left ear, with his Viking helmut on. ;D :o :D

You have plenty of good suggestions.  I generally use Butchers' Wax.  It comes in a steel can and can be removed completely with a little turpentine.

I use white candle wax for ramrod holes. Soap is OK too. I use beeswax on saws to cut aluminum, not on muzzleloaders. Good luck with the drill.

Dan, your suggestion of a burr on the long edge to create a little clearance is terrific.

Dphariss, Excellent tip about the burr. I'll give it a try. Gun drills such as you pictured are the best for deep hole drilling.
I use paste type flooring wax as a lube.

How do you add the burr to the long end of the drill bit?
