Another stock shrinkage question
« on: January 10, 2014, 02:59:07 PM »
The other thread about stock shrinkage brought this to mind.

I have seen some rifles original and contemporary with a little tab from the toe plate that interlocks with the bottom of the butt plate. I've never done this because it seems to me that when the stock shrinks in height the toe plate being locked in place with the bottom of the butt plate will pull away from the stock rather than just sliding up the butt plate. Also if the stock were to cup then this interlock thing could cause a different problem.

Does anybody do this or know if it serves a real purpose? To me it looks like a bad idea.

This is a Christian Oerter feature. I don't know if anyone else used it. Maybe Andreas Albrecht (his master). The book on Moravian rifles shows several examples of this feature in close-up.
