Trigger plate alignment w/cast off
« on: January 10, 2014, 04:55:44 AM »
When building a rifle with a longer plate for a set trigger that also has a bit of cast off what is the correct way (if there indeed is such a thing) to align the trigger plate when the cast off begins midway through its length? In line with the bore, in line with the butt, bent to follow both?

My first inclination is to align the plate so that it is centered to the bore in front and to the butt in the rear and then tweak the TG so the front sole(?) is aligned to the bore and the rear is aligned to the butt. My thought being that the TG will be what catches and directs the eye, effectively disguising the misalignment of the trigger plate.

It's not much misalignment in any case but details matter..... (and I'm crazy according to my girlfriend who's laughing at me right now after I described my dilemma)

SC,
With the cast off usually being no more than a quarter inch, I can't see this being a problem.  Just inlet front with of both plate and guard with the bore and the back with the butt and you should't be able to see it.

The old timers often had oval or elongated plates, and it didn't matter much how it was aligned.

I like the toe of the plate to be centered on the guard at the front. With cast off and a long plate, I'd tweak the tail of the trigger plate over a tad in the direction of the cast.

I usually use 3/16" castoff and move the toe of the buttplate towards the bbl centerline.....the toeline then has very little or no castoff. Don't know if the original makers did this or if any contemporary makers do this, but it certainly simplifies  lining up the trigger plate and trigger guard......Fred
