h and h barrel
« on: February 23, 2014, 10:26:31 PM »
I am just purchased a percussion 32 cal with a h and h barrel. I am wondering if anyone knows the rate of twist on these barrels.
thanks

It's probably 1 in 48 or 32, but to be sure run the ramrod with a patch on it to the bottom.  Then mark the ramrod at the muzzle at the top flat.  Pull the ramrod out tip it makes 1/4 turn, measure the length it came out, and multiply by four.  That will be your rate of twist.

**See Bill beat me to it but the same technique**

Many barrels were made with various twist rates and the only sure way to find out for sure (unless they are stamped) is to put a tight patch on a jag push, it to the breechplug then mark the ram rod at the top of the ram rod (high noon position) slowly pull the ram rod out until the rotation of the rr is 180 degree's from where it started (if started at high noon 1/2 twist would be 6PM position). This will be 1/2 a revolution/twist. Measure between the two marks on the rr and multiply by two. i.e. 24 inches between the two marks times 2 = 48 which would be 1 turn in 48 inches.

***Bill and Dennis beat me. But I'm old and slow!! ***

Another way to skin this cat is to put the tightly patched ramrod down against the breech plug.
Tape a small piece of index card (1" square say) tight to the barrel straight up. Draw out rod until
the card makes 1 full turn. Measure from the card to the barrel face. Rate of twist.

I never was good at math, adding+, minusing-, and timesingx because I only went about 1 1/4 miles to a one room school!!  ::)
If the rate of twist is greater than the barrel then try 1/2 turn x 2 as recommended!
