I was gifted this rifle an would like to understand it better

My son-in law gifted this rifle to me reciently.

I have had the folks at Collectors Firearms in Houston TX have a look at it---they feel the rifle was created in the upper Ohio River valley sometime around 1850.

I sincerely appreciate any information you might have----hope i get the pics correct.

this is on the barrel under the forearm




The barrel is 41 inches long and measures 38 calibre

Your rifle looks to be in very nice condition. I have looked in my Ohio books and I don't find anyone with the spelling you have shown. Typically the gunmaker's name will be on the top flat between the breach and the rear sight. Names on the underside are more typically the barrel maker. Look good on the top flat and also on the lock plate. Good luck.

Hi Mark:

The rifle is in pretty rough shape actually------the stock around the tang and front of the lock has had it---punky and flaking away.
I have looked carefully for any kind of makers mark and find none.
Perhaps a couple of more pics will helps some.

The people at the Davis Gun Museum in Clairmore OK just outside of Tulsa might be able to shed some light on the name. Its been several years but when I was there they had many guns that were similer.

Sellers , has a P L Hain listed, but has no info on him. Of course that is probably the barrel maker. Was some Hains from Berks County PA, according to the following,
