Rob,
The mainspring/tumbler arrangement seem to be the major malfunction.
A new tumbler and mainspring would be a fix.I wonder if a Chambers tumbler and mainspring could be engineered into such a lock.Like I said,I was only barely aware of the existence of these rifles and until
today had never seen what the lock was mechanically.

Might be easier to take a Chambers 'gunmaker' percussion lock, and fit it to the gun.

That's what I'm thinking Tom.  But I hadn't considered the Gunmaker lock 'til you mentioned it.  I'd make a new plate, and make up a lock around a proven internals system, like a Siler (Chambers'), Davis, or L & R.

I spoke too soon. Chambers makes the 'Gunmaker's lock' in flint. I didn't see one in perc.

Their Mountain lock seems fairly generous in plate dimensions. But this is something you need to see in person, with lock in hand.
