St. Patrick's Day Shoot 2014
« on: March 16, 2014, 06:02:36 AM »
The Haneys held their annual shoot today.  There were 13 shooters and 13 targets at 25 yards.  Two of us shot caplocks and of the rest, four were left-handed flintlocks.  It was about 45 degrees with 8-10 mph wind, which complicated things.  I got 10 1/2 points, next highest was 7.  I got the half point by cutting a playing card lying edgewise horizontally in a crack in the left end of that top plank by the shamrocks.  Dave, the score keeper, could hardly believe his eyes.  I also cut a string hanging under the plank.  I declined to shoot at a full-sized photo poster of a "bad guy", taking a zero for that.  I do not want to shoot at people targets.   I tied with Terry Haney at the High Uintah Mountainman Meat Shoot here (and lost to a coin toss)a couple of months ago, and won Jim Goodman's New Year's shoot, running all 17 targets, and won today.  The big boys say "No more shooting that !@*%&@ Bridger Hawken!  Next time you are score keeper."  That short 31" barrel and that short 13 1/4" length of pull make that rifle easy for me to shoot, even at 10 3/4 pounds.  Jim Goodman shooting, Joe Gondek waiting.

Joe shooting, Kyne waiting.

Kyne shooting, Big Jim waiting.

Skunk shooting, Randy waiting.

Terry Haney shooting.

Linda scoring, Carole loading.  I made her rifle.

I broke this in two for ease of posting.  The usual crowd.  I am wearing a red capote on the left, which Carole, next to me in the white, made.

Here I take first prize, a quart of Irish whiskey.

Another interesting prize.

My Bridger Hawken and the playing card I cut at 25 yards, edgewise and horizontally.

I really like the pics you post of your shoots. Looks like a fun bunch to hang with. The land is beautiful with all that open sky and I would love to have such a beautiful house ;D
Nothing beats the feel of a handmade southern iron mounted flintlock on a cold frosty morning

I love these types of shoots. A couple of years ago I had a brain storm, and decided to put on a St. Patrick's day shoot. I had a couple of 5 gal. buckets full of bottled water that had spent way to much time in the ice chest, at several of our club shoots. So. since the labels were already gone I simply unscrewed the caps, put in a drop or two of green food coloring, and called them Leprechauns. I place them at random ranges, from fifty yards, out to about two hundred yards, and turned the shooters loose. It was shoot until you miss, off hand only, with each shooter having their own spotter. Those close ones, went away pretty quick, but the two hundred yard ones took a lot of shooting to take down.
For lunch we had Corned beef parboiled, then dry rubbed with brown sugar the pickling spices, and then roasted in a dutch oven with a half bottle of Guinness extra stout. The cabbage, potatoes, celery, and carrots, were steamed using the broth from the parboiling of the meat. I had to print out this recipe because I got so many request for it.
High end Irish whiskey for first place, and the rest of the six pack of Guinness for also rans made the day. Easiest shoot I ever put on, and probably the most fun.

Looks like you all had a good time, Herb.  Thanks for posting the pictures.  I can't say for sure because I haven't seen ol' Skunk for some years, but it sure looks like the Skunk (and I mean that in a nice way) that I shared a Chadron Fur Trade Days Rendezvous camp with in the past.  He sure holds a flintlock like the Skunk I know! :)
