Smallish, simple, scrimmed horn.
« on: April 06, 2014, 03:15:26 AM »
I finished this recently. It has a tip that I have done before and I kind of like. The butt is of Walnut and was dyed with aquafortis along with the rest of the horn. A floral pattern on it that I found on line. The tip is from a cut off horn tip with the vent pick in it so I don't lose the darn thing.

Steve,

I really like the woven strap.  Nice job there.

I have never used Aqua Fortis and am a little surprised how dark it turned the walnut..  It looks good though.

Never seen a vent pick attached to a horn plug before and found that interesting.

Nice simple horn that looks well constructed and nicely scrimshanded.  Good job!

Like the way that strap blends in. I think the understated scrim adds to the horn. Seems more period correct to the horn. Great job!

I was pleased with how the Walnut came out. I want to do a copy of a  Schuler smooth bore that a friend has and this is just the right color. Nice to experiment on a piece that doesn't cost so much in money or time.
The strap is one of Pam's and she makes the size and color that we think looks good on the horn. Kind of nice to have a weaver present and ready to make what I want.

Good look'n horn Steve. So it is two separate horns? The color matched well, even if it didn't it wouldn't matter. Nice work.

It's just one horn Tim. The tip is just carved on a rather thick horn. I did one a while back and I liked the tip so I did it again.

I'm actually starting to like this tip. might see some more.

Nice turning on the butt of the first horn!  Half the plugs I make like that end up as simple domed plugs when I mess up the detailing.  I need to practice more!

I just envision I'm turning a ball and when I get to where I want the band I leave a bit of wood. after the ball is turned, I come back and dress up the bands and put the dimple in the end for the staple. My simple mind can only handle one thing at a time. Practice will certainly help!!!

This part of the OP made me wonder, "The tip is from a cut off horn tip" I misread it.

     Thanks,  Tim
