Siler Lock Part Question
« on: April 08, 2014, 04:01:46 PM »
Okay, so I made a big boo boo last night and broke my sear (don't ask, it involves my daughter and a vise). I bought my lock as a kit from Tip Curtis, so  not exactly sure who made the lock (it's a left hand, large Siler). Anyway, are all Siler parts interchangeable? I see parts for Chambers Siler locks, but I'm not sure if this will fit my tumbler, etc...I'd like to order the part very soon so any quick help would be appreciated:) thanks!

A siler is a siler, is a siler, is a siler.    The only difference is who put it together.   There are good ones and bad ones.  When
Bud Siler still owned the business, he basically sold lock kits.  I remember talking to Bud as to who was doing a good job of
assembling his locks.  He gave me a name of Dick Herring out in Michigan.   I bought a lot of locks from him and they were
done real well.  I don't know if Tip Curtis buys lock kits and does the assembly, doesn/t matter insofar as a broken sear goes,
I would call Jim and get a new sear.  Remember, you don't go to a Chevvy dealer to get your Ford fixed.........Don

Track of the Wolf, Chambers, ...any of the Siler lock suppliers should be able to help you.
The parts are the same since they ultimately would come from Chambers .
It depends on who assembles them. I'd go right /direct to Jim Chambders.

Don beat me to the "post" button !

Call up Barbie (Chambers) Garron (?) at Chambers Flintlocks.  She will treat you right.  All Siler locks come from Chambers Flintlocks as either parts sets to third-party assemblers or as finished locks.  I have broken parts and called Chambers Flintlock and Barbie always fixed me up ASAP.

Best Regards,

John Cholin

Thanks Gents! Before I saw your posts, I actually got ahold of Tip and he has the part ready to ship. Good to know that all of the part are interchangeable for the Siler, and of course there are other options out there.

Some fitting may be required, no matter where you get it from.

...and it will likely need to be hardened and tempered, after fitting.

Tip told me this one is a drop-in. I paid a bit more for it, compared to an unfinished version. Tip told me, "don't mess with it this time."  ;D

Good old Tip. Nice guy. Bought one of his Flintlocks in the white about 6 years ago. Virginia style rifle, 62 caliber 42 inch swamped barrel. Excellent rifle. Shot hundreds of times, and only on 2nd flint. Davis Jack Haugh style lock.
