Scouts day at the Log Cabin

   Last weekend we had a visit from a group of Boy Scouts at my Gunmakers' Workshop up at the Log Cabin Shop in Lodi, Ohio. I gave them a mid day presentation on the development of the Kentucky Rifle. This was a power point presentation that was put together by Henry Bishop and Kenneth Orr and is available through the Kentucky Rifle Foundation. I highly recommend it for use as a general introduction to the longrifle and it is easily adaptable for different situations and age groups. Here is a link to more information -

  After the presentation and taking a look at a few longrifles - both original and contemporary - the scouts had the opportunity to shoot a variety of muzzleloaders at the range out back (the flintlock guns seemed to be the most popular!). Many thanks to the folks at the Log Cabin and to Dave Kutcher, Bill Pachinger, Heinz Ahlers and Alan Pratt for running the range.

Good stuff Ian. This is how we grow our future shooters. There's a scout shoot going on at the gun club this weekend out here. Hopefully there are a bunch of other clubs doing this as well.

Scouts camp for free at Friendship. Often it's the same troops every year or two, but the boys cycle through the troops so even if it's the same troop, new boys are seeing the place and the goings-on. And they are sometimes pressed into service as colorguards, which is pretty cool to a kid!
