Underlug for a Sling
« on: April 13, 2014, 12:57:44 PM »
Gents,
I have a Jaeger rifle made by a late mate, hex to round barrel.   I wish to use a sling on the rifle, so need to mount a front sling swivel.  I have a TOW under lug curved base, so would like to soft solder this to the underside of the barrel.  I will tin the under lug, but am a bit concerned as to how to carefully heat location on the barrel to tin before sweating the lug on. I will be using an oxy propane torch for the job.
Any suggestions will be gratefully regarded.
    Kind regards
Gordon

Gordon,   You will not need to overheat the barrel to accomplish the job.  Just heat the barrel enough to get a thin coat of solder at the base location.  Heat the barrel lug likewise, tin, and then clamp the two together with some type of spring clamp.  Heat until they join, and let cool.  Soap stone marker crayon works good to keep the solder off areas where you don't want it.  Position you lug base in front of your second ram rod pipe so the sling swivel will lay back onto the ram rod pipe.  This will keep the swivel from getting in the way of the ram rod when it is inserted into the stock.

Best wishes
Ron

Once you have completed the job be sure to immediately oil the bore to prevent flash rust forming.

Gents,
thank bothof you  for the advice, I will post a photograph of the result as soon as I have done the job. I had not  thought of rust in the bore after soldering.  My late mate had welded a button on the second ramrod pipe so I will cut that off, and the sling swivel will rest on that pipe as advised.

Cheers

Gordon

I just soldered a bayonet lug to the top of a musket barrel. I use the Stay Bright silver solder sold by Track of the Wolf. The key is to heat the barrel slowly and evenly so the flux is not burned away and the heat is not concentrated in one spot. The Stay Bright melts at a fairly low temp so if you remove the heat as soon as the solder melts, you won't harm the steel barrel. BTW any flux that is not cleaned off as soon as the barrel cools, will cause rust within 24 hours.
