Reproduction vs Replica vs Fake vs........
« on: February 07, 2009, 09:06:48 PM »
Well, you get the idea. A replica is an Italian Colt, but just what is the difference between a fake and a reproduction or for that matter a forgery? Years ago Buchele warned against copying existing guns, but his point was that it is not artistic to do so. Perhaps the difference is the intent of the builder, but that is hardly discernable in metal and wood. I've seen dozens of Jacob Dickert rifles that copied his engraving carving and architecture. All there are as distinctive as a signature. I suppose if the signature were engraved on the barrel and it were aged it would become a forgery (or counterfeit). As is it seems like merely a fake, but that doesn't seem quite right either. How will our contemporary guns be viewed 100 years from now?
Perhaps I have spent too many idle hours in a deer stand waiting for the world's stupidest deer to dawdle by...

Your thoughts ??

This topic was extensively discussed a couple of months ago- I'll see if I can find it.  Many folks weighed in.

OK, the topic was "Kettenburg Rifle" in the "Contemporary Makers" forum and started November 6, 2008.  You should be able to find it using the Search option and putting in "Ketternburg Rifle" and limiting the search to the last 100 days.

Extensively may not be an adequate description of that discussion.
Thanks for the redirect. I don't normally hit this corner of the forum too heavily so I missed it.
