Identification Help on A Samples(?) Percussion Long Gun
« on: August 08, 2014, 11:03:58 AM »
I have a percussion long rifle that bears a stamped name either R. B. or possibly H. Samples.  I have made some contact and the names of Bethuel and Robert Samples of Urbana came up.  My initial contact with The Association of Ohio Long Rifle Collectors concluded that the gun is most likely not Bethuel.  The gun is overall 57 inches with and LOP of 13 & 3/4".  The barrel is 42"  Here is a Photo Bucket link to some pictures.  All opinions are more that welcome.

That looks for all the world like a southeastern US made gun, a mountain rifle. I can't tell you what specific region but someone here likely can. The barrel looks older than the lock and tang so it was possibly re-breeched and gained a new lock at some time in its history.

Welcome to ALR.
