Small Pipe Hawk
« on: August 11, 2014, 10:43:33 PM »
Small Davis head with some file work, about 6 X 2 X 1. Poured Pewter cap with Brass overlay, mouth, mouth piece and inlays. Cleanout plug is antler, it is threaded to keep it in place. Rawhide gasket.

Very nice Tim, all the details have a clean, light touch to them. What is the finish on the blade? Are you going to engrave the pewter inlays at all? Also that is a wonderful piece of wood.

Very nice Tim and well done. Might force me to finish a couple I have laying around in a half finished state.

That is a cold Bluing solution on the blade, one coat let it sit until a light rust forms, brushed with a wire wheel on the lathe and repeated until it looks right, to me any way. Then it is waxed.
The color on the haft started with a couple coats of a Lemon Yellow water based Stain, sanded back between coats. Followed by some oil based Mahogany stain, finished with some thinned out BLO.
Not sure about the engraving, if it were to be it would probably be simple boarders following the inlay designs.

Tim,
Don't know whether to say the hawk is beautiful or handsome. Great work.

I really like that wood finish. Are those stains wood stains? Impressive rich color. The pewter tip reminds me favorably of a Sharps '74 pewter forend tip. That is one attractive piece. Best wishes, Marc
