Does anyone use a grain filler under permalyn? If so, what brands are compatable?

Thanks,
Bill

Thr filler Constantines sell works fine with permalyn,
I think any of the oil based silica fillers would be fine.

I assume we're talking about black walnut. Try this. Seal with the Permalyn. Paint the stock with black Rustoleum so the grain is filled.  Sand it back down to remove the black leaving it in the pores. Then finish with Permalyn. Looks great.

Bill, just an opinion as I've rarely used ash. Ash is a different cat. I don't think I'd use it to fill the grain and get a perfect smooth finish. Defeats the puropse. There's a Chuck Edwards rifle on the Contemporary blog in ash. This is, in my opinion, what it should look like. look at Ian Pratt's rifles in ash. Bill

Thanks Bill,  I'm thinking the same as you but want to try filling it once. I talked to Ian at the Lewisburg show. He said he has done ash both filled and not filled and used Chambers filler, which is black.  I was hoping to find a filler locally, Lowes, Home Depot, etc.  that is clear or lighter.
