Short Barreled Smoothbore
« on: August 22, 2014, 05:41:47 AM »
Been making these short smoothbores for folks that can't shoulder a long rifle, Women & kids seem to take to 'em----as they go about 4 lb.  in 24 or 16 bore.   This one is a 24 bore X 26" tapered round bbl.  Maple stock from a blank, steel trim, Delux siler lock.  Take a look and let me have it, I can hack it---sometimes....Tom

Clicked on the pic, then slideshow. Went well with my morning coffee.

I like the buttplate. Did you make it?

Love these short barreled smoothbores!  Built one a few years ago with a Belgium 11ga 29" barrel I had traded for. Made a hooked breech for it and built it with a little French influence.  Great little gun and real handy in a canoe.

Thanks for the kind words guys.  Lot of argument about shorty's, but not everyone can lift a long gun.  I just want to get those folks shooting, something, anything....Not many canoes here in desert, BUT I heard theres a good crop of sand sharks this year.....Tom

Is that a desert subspecies of "land sharks," those guys who swindle and shanghai sailors ashore?

Kermit, they may well be a sub-species.  Here they tend to be found in areas where there's a high concentration of jackalopes (their fav. chow)    This may be somewhat off topic ????....Tom

I just bought a 26" 16 ga. barrel.  I got it to make a blunderbuss but have been having second thoughts about just using the whole thing and making a short shotgun.  I am going to go flint that I am sure of.  A super light weight gun may be all I can shoot in a few years anyway.  john

A question, is the stock pattern based off of a trade gun pattern or something else?
I certainly agree that guns that get shot are better than ones that get stuck in the closet, you're performing a real service to our sport.

okieboy,  this stock is patterned right off an old (1977) Remington 870.  2-3/4" drop & 13-1/2" pull.  Those Northwest guns have a flat topped comb--and can bite your face/cheek bone.    Tom

Tom,
You sure that 870 stock was not cut? Remington made them 14.25 and 14 back then IIRC.
