gl jones gun builder
« on: October 15, 2014, 09:26:27 PM »
Can anyone provide information on GL Jones a gun builder in Utah? Would like to know something about his skill level, craftsmanship and artistry in muzzleloaders. I know nothing about his work and was hoping to learn something from others who know him and the quality of his craftsmanship.
Thanks.

I have one. Marked G L Jones Va. It's a nice rifle.  I think it's a Virginia school of some flavour, not sure. Getz 42" swamped barrel, L&R lock, wood PB, all furniture inlet very nicely, boldly carved. Shoots good. .54 calibre
A few mods. Single set and hunting sites.(shallow "V" rear and a bead front.)

I had a bad experience with him back in the 90's. The rifle went to Jack Brooks to be re-stocked. Send me a private message if you want details.

I and a friend each have one and the workmanship is very good although delivery time can be slow.

I can spot them from 20 yards away, very distinctive style. Some of them are pretty good and I've seen some real chunky monkeys too. He seems to be quite prolific also.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?
