Fowler build advice please
« on: November 04, 2014, 03:05:06 PM »
A friend wants me to build him a fowler now. I have already built him an early Virginia 54. His persona is longhunter-Daniel Boone type, late mid 18th century.
He will defiantly be using it for turkey hunting, so my usual build 20ga cyl choke barreled foulers probably won't be ideal. Also, my usual New England fowler style probably would be wrong too. Please help me with barrel type and style. I'm on new ground here.
                                            Thanks,Turtle

Go English, export grade, walnut stock and brass mounts. Cyl. 20 bore will kill turkeys to 30 yds or so.

Cut a jug choke into the barrel. Will help with shot and does not affect a patched round ball.

How about an oct/round early southern style like Don Bruton used to build. I have a photo of one somewhere around here. Time period is F&I war.

Why are you limited to a 20ga?  Brown Bess was a 12ga so barrels that large were in use long before Daniel Boone.  Jug choke will improve the range and the 12 could produce a significant turkey loading.  If you want to go even larger I think Rayl makes 10ga barrels too.  Now that would be a real turkey gun!

No I wasn't ruling out bigger gauges, just never built one. Anybody familiar with Colerain  turkey choke barrels?

24 bore at the muzzle tapering to 20 bore on the way down. Not wad friendly, tends to destroy your wads loading 20 bore wads loading them in a 24 bore muzzle.

If turkeys is what your after Colerains 20 ga turkey choke barrel is what you want .My load is IIRC 80 grs 2 ff 2 os card ,a couple of thin greased felt wads ,2 more os cards,80 grs # 4s shot and then os card to keep it all in place. 2 shot of this load will destroy a paper plate at 30 yards.A rear sight might be a good idea also .I will never switch back to a straight bored smooth bore if i can help it .Curt

I used to own a fowler built by Mike Brooks, jug choked  and a wicked turkey killer. It would also shoot a patched roundball better than I could. Like Mike says "jugged by someone who knows how"

Definitely have it jug choked.  I had my 20 gauge Colerain done and it works great.  I believe I paid about $100 plus shipping.
