Couldn't engrave soft brass worth a hoot lately. Woke up in the middle of the night and realised  I didn't have enough shoe. Correctly sharpened my graver today and my problem is solved.

I have never heard the term but just guessing it means the size of the two heels together.  Is that correct?

Yep, I suppose. it's the little flat spot a square graver rides on. I didn't have it done properly so t was diving badly...not no more!

One issue that I am still trying to wrap my brain around is being able to feel the vibrations in the graver... A long skinny graver will have some bounce to it.  If you try and hold it to hard it will bounce out of the track. A thick graver (with whatever shape the face you want) held loosely and tapped lightly cuts true.

 try thinking of the graver as a wood chisel  or gouge . The bevel of the chisel being the heel .
 Without the  bevel the chisel will dive into the wood . Flitp it over with the bevel down and  it will ride along at depth or rise out of the wood .
 With softer materials like  Brass or Aluminum , I use just a tad larger heel then if im working on a harder steel  . I find that to help me control the depth of the graver more easily

Yep, could engrave steel no problemo the way it was. Sticky old soft brass just wasn't working. You know, I knew that for many years but brain farted on this lately.

Words are wonderful.  Epiphanes spar varnish mixed with linseed oil and turpentine makes a great finish.
