in search of advise
« on: November 07, 2014, 03:01:52 PM »
being a so so builder, i'm thinking of a lighter 50 cal with a 44" barrel. the rifle i shoot now is 50 cal with a 46" long barrel in "D" profile made by Ed Rayel, its a little heavy for an old booger, so i thinking of a rifle in"C" profile. any thoughts on the matter?

A few years ago I built a .50 with a 42" "C" weight Colerain barrel . A late Lancaster style rifle. It holds good and is a real shooter.

Go with a B weight 50 if you want light. I find C weights to be ideal in .54 , they're a bit heavy in 50.
That D weight in 50 has to handle like a boat anchor. :P

many moons ago i had no problem holding ole Red (my rifle), i've been known to shoot five shots in one hole, but now old age is creeping up on me, i now shoot one hole with one shot. growing old is not for wimps!

Heck you might find the B/50 a bit whippy after years of holding a D/50 (holy fatpipes).  ...but then it's way easy to add weight back to a completed build.  My C/54x42 is just right-but a little short.  I'm for the B/50.

Rice makes an excellent "A" weight barrel in .50 cal., called a "Southern Classic".  Very light, and makes for a slim, light rifle.  I believe it's 42" though.  Also would work better for a Golden Age piece, not so much an early rifle...  I used this barrel on my personal hunting rifle and couldn't be more pleased.  I've found it to be very accurate...

I have an Early Dickert style on a 44" B weight 50 cal. Handles and balances beautifully. Enough weight to be steady but not enough to be heavy.

Wouldn't bother me, light dovetail or solder the lug on. I make guns with far thinner barrels than that.

The front sight can certainly be attached safely, but the measurements shown on Rice's website for the 44" B-weight are 1.000" at the breech, then .765, .732, .742, and .870 at the muzzle.  If the muzzle is .795, that ain't much flare, but if Yip likes it.... great.  It's just not what is advertised.

called Jason of Rice barrel this morning, he said he makes his dove tails .050 deep and there will be problems. so i'll give it a try, the barrel is a beauty, and the B profile is the most popular, just a little Leary............yip
