Screwdrivers

I have a complete set of Brownells Magna Tip bits and several of their handles. I love them. But, original longrifles would have had V cut slots, so they are not always the best choice. My only problem with grinding "cheap" screwdrivers to fit is they are cheap for a reason, sometimes the metal is about the consistency of play doh or the handles are way small or the screwdriver shank twists in the handle with any torque. Sometimes this is a problem when trying to loosen a tight or rusted on screw. My advice would be get a few quality screwdrivers at a flea market and grind them to go along with your cheapo's.

I have had a set of Chapman drivers since 1967 and the only thing that has been replaced is the No. 31 hex. And only because I lost it while working on a radar in Viet Nam. Best d@mn screwdrivers I've ever owned. I don't remember what I paid for them back then but you can get the same set today for $33.00. Made in America & packaged in America. Not made in China and packaged in America. That's pretty hard to beat.

I enjoy walking through hardware stores and dept.s looking for cheap, wood handled screwdrivers. Once in a great  one of my buys is too soft and is discarded....but, mainly am surprised  at the "just right" hardness of these cheap screwdrivers.

When grinding a screwdriver to a screw slot, the tips are always hollow ground  using the grinding wheel dia.

Don't like "buggered" screw slots and all the screw heads are carburized. and that along w/ the hollow ground tips, eliminate damaged screw slots.....Fred

I started out with a set of Grace drivers that were abominably soft and broke right and left.  Within a year I srapped that and went to Brownell's Magna-tips, which I have used ever since.  The lifetime guarantee doesn't hurt.  I am sure there are other well made drivers out there, but I've just not had the need to change.

I think the point here is no matter what brand you buy - buy quality and you will never regret it .

Wow, sounds like you got you money's worth after 50 years Thanks so much for recommending our tools, and I'm glad to hear that our set served you well in Vietnam and back.

We're still here in Durham, CT making the same tools (plus a bunch of new ones). Now we have about 15 people proud to still be US made from US materials, assembled, packaged, shipped, etc. Fun fact: one lady that started in the summer of '66 just retired last year unfortunately due to health reasons. If you bought the same set last year it's likely she would assembled your '67 set and your 2016 set.
