use of stones for finishing

I posted this in the tutorial section, thought I may have placed in wrong forum.  Admin please feel free to delete post from lock finishing tutorial if necessary.

I just got a couple of the stones from Gesswein to give stoning a try. Was wondering about the preferred method of use.  You guys use them with oil, water or just dry?  I hit the lock a few licks with one dry and it looks like it would clog up quickly.

Stones are generally used with oil, unless it is a Japanese stone which traditionally use water.  The oil or water helps keep the pores from loading with material during use.

Hope this helps.

Kerosene works good, maybe better than oil.  Our tool and die maker stores his stones in a coffee can with kerosene to keep them clean.
