Help With Gun Maker Please
« on: December 21, 2014, 01:51:07 AM »
Hi Folks, I looked at a rifle recently that I could use some help with.  The gun is an over/under side slapper.  It is not something I would usually look at since it's in very poor condition. The stock is badly broken with a large copper patch covering all of the wrist and a good part of the stock.  Large gaps between the stock and barrels, poor bores, part of the rib is missing, you get the picture. Having said that I don't have one and there might be a gun in there but lots of work to dig it out.  If I can determine if it came from an area I am interested in I will make a run at it.  Here is what I have: Both the lock and barrel are marked S. A. J. Hale.  I have exhausted all my references with no hits.  Anyone run across this name?  It has an "Ohio" look to it but nothing in the Ohio books.  Thanks, Jack

According to AMERICAN GUNMAKERS by Gardner, S. A. J. Hale worked in Midland Michigan in 1875-78. Hope this helps with your decision.
