Question about horns

So i got a horn from a fellow about an hour from where I live today.  When I got it home I noticed that it has a small spot on the back of the horn that feels fairly soft and will crackly very slightly if i push on it.  Is it common for horns to have "soft" spots? it is my first horn and it was inexpensive, so should I put some clear epoxy over the area and polish it up, or should I look for a different horn, and just use that one as a decoration?  If so where is a good place to find an inexpensive horn just for hunting/ target shooting.  Thanks for the advice, Adam

Blow hard into the horn and see if it is air tight.  If it is air tight use it.  If the crackle is just noise but no cracks it will be okay.  Thin spots are not the best thing if they get this soft.  Someone scrapped that area a little too thin.

 Is it a raw horn or a powder horn? A pic would help. There are a couple of ways to repair it depending on what you've got. Raw hide, Pewter, Horn, Tin, not Epoxy.

I have a southern banded horn that has a piece of copper for a repair.  Many options that can be done.
