Perfect idea Kutter! I can scrounge some big rebar for sure. I'll anneal before I start fitting it.

Thanks for all the advice guys. This ended up as another example of how much easier things go if you use the right tool. I found a guy locally who used a TIG welder with a very small flame. He got it filled in and good as new in no time.
