Forestock warp.. Fix it or leave it and pin it?
« on: January 06, 2015, 09:14:41 PM »
Thats the question and here is the rest of the story.    I'm on my first build from a blank.  I inlet the barrel, drilled the ramrod hole right on the money (yeah me! and thanks for the advice on this forum.)
When I trimmed the sides of the blank down to a shade over an 1/8th I noticed the piece being cut off the left side was bending away from the barrel.
While inletting the lock I noticed that I no longer have full contact with the barrel in the bottom of the barrel channel at about the midway point. It seem's to move about a 1/16 to and 1/8th of an inch when I clamp the barrel down.  I think that when I cut it, it released tension in the wood and now it has a slight bow to it. It is still touching at the breach and at the muzzle.  Is this a big deal?  Should I just go ahead and pin the barrel in place or should I try to take some of the bow out?

Once the stock is fully shaped, it is the barrel that holds it together.  I wouldn't worry about a little warp or twist in the forestock - I'd almost say it's uncommon to have a forestock on a fancy piece of maple that actually stays straight when fully shaped.  If you haven't done so already, install your barrel tenons and pin the barrel in place, then continue to shape the rest of the gun as planned.

Thats what I figured but it would be much easier to fix now that later.  Pinning the barrel is the next step.  BTW this rifle is being built from your petite Lehigh plans.

Once you get the barrel inlet always leave it there when you are done working for the day. If you don't want to pin and un pin each time use masking tape or Velcro straps. The wood will often move if you let it.

also protects the stock from breakage.   keep it in there as much as you possibly can.

Thanks every one.  The barrel has stayed in the barrel channel since it was finished.  I noticed the warp when I was moving one of the clamps I'm using to hold it secure.

Eric,
I will sure let you see some pics when it's completed.  I hope it does the plans justice.  I will definitely send you a message if I have any questions.
