Pistol Barrel
« on: January 07, 2015, 11:38:19 PM »
I have come into possession of this nice brass pistol barrel. It is a .50 cal. smooth bore, eleven inches long, 1-1/8" at the breech. I have made a couple pistols but am not well versed in the different styles. I would like to make this into a pistol of a style that would be appropriate for this barrel configuration and am looking for a little help getting me pointed in the right direction. Pictures would be a big help as well. Thanks!

These barrel features in combination, are typical to both Dutch pieces or those made in Liege around the 1740 time frame. I have a pic of a Behr. Although this barrel is not near exact, the combination of features; oct to steps, wedding band to round with another band then a muzzle bell, is to a 1740 Dutch flint breechloading turnoff pistol by Behr. But thats a complicated build and the whole pistol is shorter. But an optical illusion could be made into a muzzleloader; but the length of this barrel would be off.
Using this barrel, a standard Liege Dutch holster pistol config for this length would be somewhat correct (or close) for around 1740, but she's gonna be a heavy one, no matter what you do! Do you know who made the barrel?
Hope this helps.

Thank you Susie. I do not know who made the barrel, it was a gift to me and there was no information with it. Not being well versed in pistol design, when I saw it, Dutch was the first word that came to mind, and I have no idea why. Maybe its the decorative filing that to my eye resembles Tulips, Hah! Well, its a start and I appreciate your response. Must be a tough question.

That looks like one of Bill Kennedy's barrels.I used a similar one(with out the canon end) on a French pistol I did a while back.He offered them as an upgrade on his pistols kits from time to time.

Thank you Taylor! Finally recovered from the stroke. Rough stuff. But can't stay away from gunmakin. Thankfully, I didn't lose anything from the memory on the craft. It did take a while to get the left side physical back to normal, but my rights fine. Miss all of yall!

Hey Robby  I have a rifled barrel in much the same shape but steel. I'm thinking Danish Gents type pistol. Mine is without the wedding band, tapered and flared to a  muzzle bell. Dutch, Danish...same thing right?    Lowland Germans. ;D
