Personal hunting bag.

Posting this in a new thread so as not to hijack Roger B's post on his bag.  Want to show couple points about the construction which might help him.  The binding is same leather as bag body but after cutting the strip I skived it (thinned it) so it would fold around the edge of the cover more snugly.  It is stitched as close to the edge of the flap as would give secure stitching.  The binding is also about as narrow as that would allow too.  Premarked all the stitch holes with a stitch wheel and used an awl to pre punch the holes in all the pieces beforehand.  I now use a drill in a Dremel tool to punch the holes as it gives a more uniform hole and works with thick leather well too.  (I know historically no Dremel.)  Waxed the linen thread by drawing it through chunk of beeswax several times.  Helps to bind things together and easier to get thread through too.  Bag has a gusset, the main pocket is divided into two and there is a smaller pocket right under the flap.  Having been dragged around the mountains for a few elk seasons it has taken on a nice old character IMHO.  Knife sheath is sewn to the strap at the leather reinforcement.


LRB made the knife which I have put into a wooden sheath covered in leather.  Might change that to extend the handle coverage a couple more inches. I like the extra protection a wood sheath gives me in case I were to fall on the bag.

I guess as bags go it on the larger end of the scale.  10 1/2" widest and 8" high.  Made it large enough to hold what I thought would be my essentials to hunt with the flintlock.  So far I have been happy with the size and utility.

Thanks for the tips . I really like this bag and I have a question. How is the flap secured to the bag ? I have been looking and cannot  figure this out.

The flap is sewn flat against the back edge of the bag and the binding along the top edge at the same time.  The binding from the top of the bag continues around the flap. The top edge of the pockets also have a binding and just butts up to the flap at the corners.   Split tabs for the strap are stitched over that.

I like it! And I agree with shifty... I don't like D-rings-- prefer straps sewn directly to the bag.  Don't know why we see so many bags today with straps attached to rings, as I hardly ever see original bags that way and doubt it was common, especially in the 18th Century.  Beautiful ball grip handle on that LRB knife, too-- I need one like that!

It's hard not to use rings for attaching the straps to the bag when just like linings, everyone seems to expect that treatment.  Few bags were lined, and if you think about it lining a bag really doesn't make a lot of sense particularly if you are using linen or soem woven material.

I like this bag.  would like a look at that knife.
