A couple of questions
« on: February 27, 2009, 04:50:10 AM »
Hi guys and gals,....I'm new here and what I need is some pics and dimension of the Tennesse, Kentucky and Lancaster style gun stocks. I'm not exactly sure what style I want built so I'd like to make comparisons. Thanks.

What you need to know first is what you want to do with your project. Target shooting, squirrel hunting, or Deer hunting. Once you know what your final goal is then you can talk about dimensions but each barrel depending on caliber is going to be different in size and therefore make the final size of your gun larger or smaller. I sugest you buy plans from one of the suppliers to get the details you are looking for as a starting point. They are cheep for the information they contain

First off, welcome to the ALR.  You need to refine your request a little more.
It's like asking to show pic's or 50's, 60's, and 70's  hot rods by Frd, GM, and Chrysler.  It's pretty vague.  There are early , and late periods, Tennessee, and Kentucky were one place, Lancaster, was a county of Pennsylvania, of which there are at least twenty schools there alone.  Tennessee rifles are probably better described as Southern Mountain, as they are from Virginia, the Carolina's, and Tennessee. Kentucky was the territory west of the Cumberland.  The board if willing to help, but we need a little more info, about such things, as what you plan to do with this build, and even your skill level.  For some history, check out www.americanhistoricservices.com  It will give you some perspective, with the originals.  again welcome.

Shooter93,
Here's a website that shows many different style rifles.  I wore one of their catalogs out before I decided what I wanted to build first.  If you look around on their website, you will find guns for sale.  That's a pretty good place to look also.

Check out our own Virtual Museum and Library at the bottom of the bulletin board page.

Also hit the links for modern builders for different styles.

First of all I really appreciate the ALR library.  Collectors books, such as the one I own show the fanciest, most collectable if you will.  One can see examples of some of the plainer rifles in the library as well as nicer ones.  They are important too.  Thank you.  Another source is page back on this site and see examples of modern rebuilds members of this forum built.  Most are pretty well done, some are fantastic.
