The Boonesborough Horn
« on: March 01, 2015, 08:33:06 PM »
The information in this initial post was copied from an earlier thread about the Boonesborough ALR meeting held in January, where we were treated to see an old relic horn from the area.  Since then, one of our friends and ALR member, David R, has made a horn that was inspired by that relic horn.  David posted his new horn in the old Boonesborough meeting thread, but I’m pretty sure it is not being seen there, so I have started this new thread.  I hope David doesn't mind, but you guys have to see this horn!

At the ALR get-together at Fort Boonesborough in January a gentleman and his wife brought a relic horn to the Fort, to see if the Fort would accept it as a donation.  The man’s father had found the horn when he was about 15 years old (approx. 100 years ago), in the woods that later would be part of Fort Boonesborough State Park.  The horn is fairly small but has a lot of twist, about 8” long and the mouth about 2 by 2-1/2”.  One side of the horn was worn thru from extended use.  We were just lucky to happen to be at the Fort when the couple came in with the horn and they allowed us to photograph it.

Following is David R's post from the old Booneborough meeting thread.

Here is my interpretation of the original relic horn we saw at the fort that day. Will make a good "day" or hunting horn.

That looks to me to be a fine replica of an unusual horn.  I like it.   Marc

Well done Ron!!

David R made the horn.  I just moved the post over here where folks would see it.  I think David's horn is the GGG-Grandson of the original!

Hey Ron, you make nice horns!  I still have an applied tip horn you made years ago. Cherry plug.  It goes great with my little Tenn.Mtn rifle.
