What is in Japan Drier?  I have mixed it with BLO for a finish and gotten decent results but this has been on guns that were not subject to rain, etc.  Would it be any more "moisture proof" than just BLO by itself?

At one time Japan dryer was shellac worked into a linseed oil with some lead dryer metal added.

About 20 years ago I had noticed that Birchwood Casey Tru Oil used a japan dryer.  It must have had shellac in it because if water laid on the stock for any length of time the area would turn cloudy or white.
I had leaned my first Schimmel up against a tree with the butt in wet grass.  It only took about 30 minutes for the area around the butt plate to show the effect of water.

I've finished some wood with beeswax.  While it's quick and easy, and fairly attractive, it ain't real durable.  It waterspots VERY easily, and never goes away without remelting the wax.

On my linseed oil or oil varnish finished stocks, they will make a slight waterspot if water stands on it for a while, it will dry out and go away, leaving the wood and finish unaffected.
When a reenactor says "They didn't write everything down"   what that really means is: "I'm too lazy to look for documentation."
