Pistol Case
« on: March 21, 2015, 09:19:58 PM »
I would like to purchase a nice wooden case for my flintlock pistol.  Can anyone suggest a source?

Thanks,

I would commission a box maker from this site.  You might post a WTB in the classified section, or (noting your low post count) simply peruse the listings there and the boxes shown in this section for an idea of who makes what.

Also see some excellent work at Art Riser's blog, "Contemporary Makers".

So far I've found "Bill's Cases" and of course Spiderman.  I own one of Mike's boxes and it is spectacular, nice curly maple, but it is basically a box.  The cases on Bill's website are fitted out for pistols, but I've never personally seen one.

Just in case anyone else is interested in a source for a pistol case.

I'm not sure if you mean a box for toting to the range, or for a display purpose.

I recently bought my first dedicated target pistol, and am now looking for a box to tote said pistol and all of it's accoutrements (a word I rarely get to use except here) to the range. Unless I stumble upon something beautiful, I expect mine will be a matter of "Form follows function".

Trent, My box from Spiderman is both beautiful and functional. I bet he could fix you up. I'm going for display right now.

Hi,
Yup, a pistol case should be functional as well as decorative.

Dave - Those must be the state of the art Frizzen-less pistol locks, eh?  Did you make that set and box, or is it original?

Hi Eric,
I made almost everything: http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=8046.0.  Also Eric, I wrote a 5-part tutorial about the process of making an authentic case.  It is in the ALR tutorial section.  Since I made it in late 2009, the mahogany is darkening nicely and the case matches the other antique mahogany furniture in my brother's house.

That's beautiful Dave - I missed those pistols, when you posted them I was in the midst of college and wasn't able to pay as much attention to the ALR.  Gorgeous work!

Daryl - is that a spare wheel for the pistol lock?  If so, is it necessary to have one for a wheellock - do they wear out after much time?

Eric, I made two wheels from oil hardening steel for this wheellock.  One is serrated for pyrites and the other, smooth, for flint.  Neither has worn out , though the flint one shows some wear, of course.  They both spark like a cutting torch.

The case I made for this pistol is of Philippine mahogany.  It is soft and not very interesting wood, but with a reddish stain and some finish, it looks ok.  I used a material called "velvetine" (sp?) to cover the partitions.
