The missing Lewis  & Clark model rifle!

Then again,,,, maybe not.
Actually, I don't have a clue, but I'll bet someone will.

Hi,
I believe that is a stock for a model 1873 breech loading trapdoor Springfield.  Unfortunately, we don't allow discussion of breech loading cartridge guns on this forum.

Agreed...first thing that went through my head.  One of the Springfield trap door models.  I'm not familiar enough with the variations to say which one as the stocks may all be identical.

M-1884 seems most likely due to the rounding of the lock panels...definitely out of scope for this site.

The cartouche initials (SWP) are that of Master Armorer Samuel W. Porter. The date of 1888 would place it as a Model 1884 Trapdoor in the serial number range of about 430000 to 440000. Although the stock is not "mint" it does look unmolested and would be desirable to someone who has the metal parts but is missing a stock or their stock is busted/modified.

Hi Folks,
I think Dave has his answer so I am going to lock the thread to give some time for him to read it and then it will be removed.
