« on: June 20, 2015, 02:52:28 AM »
wondering what militia rifleman during the rev war would use for loading bag.....??? No buckles or anything to stop them from getting inside quick an grabbing paper patched balls ...I would guess!!!....predrilled wooden block for readymade cartridges. Smaller bag an not large I would think....maybe thrown loose paper patch cartridges .......any thoughts on what was used???........sonny

From what I've read- powder in a horn so he could adjust charge for distance and loose balls in pouch or bag.. Maybe some paper cartridges for a pinch.

The series "The Packet" portrayed a drilled wooden cartridge block with a leather flap, and the whole thing suspended from a shoulder strap like the regulation leather boxes were.

Sonny a RIFLEMAN would not use paper  patched balls or ready made cartridges. He would load from a powder horn and pouch and use a patched ball. The militia, if using a smoothbore would (loosely) copy one of the many styles of cartridge boxes being produced at the time......Ed
