Selling guns
« on: March 05, 2009, 07:00:46 AM »
I didn't know where to put this.  Move it if you have to.

Has anyone sold their guns at Dixon's thru consignment?  I've seen guns hanging from Dixon's ceiling with names I recognise but I'm not there often enough to notice how frequently they come and go.

I've noticed several people talking about selling thru TOW.  How does their commission compare to Chuck's? Does TOW move them faster?

It seems that when you add TOW's commission and the cost of shipping to them the gun is either over priced or the builder is getting the short end of the stick.

Thanks,
Bill

Billd.
I have sold a few gonnes at Dixon's in the past.  He asks you what you want for the gun and then he puts a price on it that covers what he wants.  He will tell you if he thinks that his price will put the gun over the limit most dudes are willing to pay for your gun.  He is very honest about what he does.  If the gun sells you get what you asked for it.  There is never a shipping charge because the customer carries it out the door and drives it home.
This has been my experience.

All I can say is my experience with TOW, get the price on it YOU want for You, as they will try to downgrade it to get the price lower & move it faster.
They mark them up  35% on top of what you want, so stick to your price.......  And have it in writing that you can get it back free & clear if it doesn't sell in an allotted amount of time..

I've sold one gun through Dixons.  Went pretty much as Vol. says.

I would call before you show up with the gun.  Make sure Chuck or Greg will be there.

I thought TOW was the place- I sold a Hawken there thinking I would come out good- they sold the rifle after 1 1/2 years time period. Then I got a check for $450. I was floored, they said half of the money was to cover the listing and 4 pictures. You all should go with "Dixons" or sell it cheap because at TOW you will get screwed, Listen to me on this- The Great Pinyone

I haven't sold through Dixon's in 20 years but when I did sell 3 guns there it worked great.  I prefer selling on consignment because I can build what I want.  Dixon's gets a lot of traffic of guys who are looking for quality and who know something about what they are looking for.

If you sell on consignment, you just have to get over the fact that they are making money on your work.  If that is going to be a hangup, try working through the CLA site, posting here, etc.  Or you could spend a lot of time and money going to shows.  There's no easy way even for those who are established- they still need to get exposure.

TOW can get you exposure and they take great photos and do reasonable hype writeups.  I'd write my own copy and send it to them and hope they use most of it.  But I think you'd need to sell a half a dozen through Track to get guys to notice your work and remember your name.

Myself and several other people that I know have sold many guns through TOW, and have never had an experience anywhere near like that.  Prices have always been established up front, and that is EXACTLY the amount that was on the check when it arrived.  Nothing but great experiences with them.  If you want to get your gun exposed to a large customer base, TOW is the way to go.   Have not sold through Dixon's myself, but have heard many good things.

Pinyone,
I'm wondering how I would get screwed if I sent a gun to Track of my own free will, told them the price I wanted, they tell me the % they are going to mark it up.  We agree on how long it will be for sale.  Then it sells and they get their money and I get mine....as we agreed.  Now exactly how is that getting screwed?

I just sold a rifle on Track of the Wolf.  We agreed on my sale price, they added their markup and listed the gun on their site.  The gun sold in 2 months time and I received a check for my agreed upon sale price. No problem.  I sold 2 guns last summer with them and I had the same experience.  You can't beat Track of the Wolf for exposure. The get a phenomenal amount of traffic on their website.

Hi Hawk.  Can't say I've ever had the privilege of speaking to you before, although I know the person you're referring to.  Not many people in the world that share my same name, so when I come across one of them I try to remember when/where I have run into them.  Done business with TOW for quite some time, and I remember talking to the same person you're referring to.  Anyway...don't want to get this thread off topic, but nice to meet you.
