Hello! New to Forum
« on: May 04, 2015, 04:10:36 AM »
Hello everybody. I am new to the forum and just wanted to say hello.  I have thought about building a long rifle for a long time.  I am currently building a Lyman Great Plains Rifle from a kit (.54 cal  flintlock).  I am enjoying it a lot and am already shopping for my next project…..although the current kit is only half done. I was not keen on a "kit" but one has to start somewhere and I am learning a lot.  I am most definitely bitten by the bug….I have also recently purchased an old (70's??) spanish hawken style flintlock to practice on….dovetailing…etc…I am sure I am going to make a lot of mistakes and will be asking for some advice or direction.  Look forward to further discussion with everybody
Cheers, Billy……..a new rookie

Welcome to the board, Billy. A kit is an excellent way to get started. You'll get the feel of what's going on wit longrifles.

Take note of the breech area on your current build. When you build another gun, you'll need to be placing all those screws without interfering the ramrod, where to place the tang screw, etc.

Good luck!

Hey Billy,
Your beginnings sound a lot like mine.  I bought a GPR on gunbroker that was assembled but not "worked down" as needed.  I took her all apart, reworked the tang bend, got rid of the perch belly, and in my case replaced the lock.  You will find some really good instruction on here about what needs to be done to get her looking sweet.  Taylor has posted some good hints and you can see mine and others on here as well.  And I really do know all about gettin bit by this bug-it can hit you hard but at least the little lady knows where you are late at night!!
