Barrel Marking Stamps
« on: May 13, 2015, 02:19:13 AM »
Anybody know where to get hand stamps for marking an 1803 Harper's Ferry barrel?  I am making a very special rifle for the EOD Warrior Foundation.  They have an annual fund raising auction for a very worthy cause.  2016 is the 75th anniversary of Bomb disposal for the Armed Forces.  The rifle will be appropriately marked to commemorate this event.  Looking for a "US" stamp and whatever else is proper for an 1803.
Anyone interested in the foundation, go to www.eodwarriorfoundation.org  I attended this year and was humbled by a close knit community of disposaleers.  Many prostheses, wheel chairs and white canes.  Moderator move if this doesn't belong here.

Try pistol kit supplier Chris Altland, he offers custom stamps, I believe. You supply the artwork. http://www.firelockpistols.com/

The 1803 barrel I have came complete with proper proof marks et al.  The barrel is marked with Hoyt, meaning Bobby Hoyt.  You might try him.  If you want to add serial numbers, you should check out photos of some of the originals in the Southern Arsenal book which is the history of the Harpers Ferry arsenal.

I am sure there are folks that make stamps commercially, but if you know exactly what you want,  our own David Crisali likes to make little things like that and might be able to help you out.    Personally,  I would try to make something like that myself.   I have made smaller stamps out of 1018 rod (case hardened) and O-1 drill rod.   The stuff I have made were easily accomplished with needle files and a square graver.    I believe there is a tutorial here somewhere showing the process.   Maybe someone else will remember where.   I have also bought various style letter and number stamps from Brownells, Tandy, Amazon, and eBay.   I use stamps for metal and leather.   Of course the ones you use on metal need to be hardened, but barrel steel is pretty soft and they don't need to be real hard.
