« on: May 16, 2015, 07:01:27 PM »
I am new to gun building and  am really enjoying the book "The Gunsmith of Grenville County"….I find the information there to be extremely helpful and I have heard that there might be a companion DVD release of the book.  Does anybody have any information on this? Are they available yet? Where?…..Thanks…..any info would be appreciated

The DVD of which you speak is like the mythical virgin in New York City, or Californie, we all heard of her, but never saw her. ::)
Seriously, I do not think Peter has been able to complete the task of producing the DVD.
Wait though son, look into the Heavins, it will come, it will come.

I've not seen the DVD's advertised for sale anywhere yet. However if you look on You Tube under Rob Alexander there are about 6 hours worth video footage which I'm guessing will be made into DVD's.

I have the VHS set.  It is good stuff.  I am intensely interested in the subject and a TV watcher.  Still, I found the videos to be tedious.  The production quality is amateurish.  There is repeated footage.   I can endure about an hour at a sitting.

That being said, I think I may transfer it to disk.  I could then follow along in my shop with  an old lap top.  It is difficult to fast forward with any precision on the tapes.  The picture quality is not up to modem standards.  That could be my old tape or old analog cameras, I am not sure.   He does break down the steps and procedures to the tiniest details, this is very cool.  It appears to have been a huge effort to produce the videos.  I am glad I have the tapes and do recommend them.

Hi,  This is the Gunsmith of Grenville County, and, I guess, after Fred Ford's post, I had better set the record straight about the progress of the videos.  First of all, the first offering - and I don't know how many DVDs yet - will be called "Stocking the Longrifle", and essentially covers what students do in my 2-week course:  starting with a swamped barrel inletted in a stock blank, the stock is profiled, thinned down, the lock inletted, the butt plate prepared and inletted, the butt stock fully shaped, barrel lugs made and installed, drilled for pins ' keys - NB: we do two rifles in this project: a normal rifle and a Lehigh Valley rifle - ramrod pipes made and installed, the forestock shaped, muzzle caps made and installed.  You must realixe that, while I am retired, my son, Andrew, the expert video-er, has to work for a living, so he can only put together the hours of video (which I have edited) in his spare time.  BTW - the member who posted about the original videotape set being amateur, boring, not up to today's standards, is correct, but at the time they were produced, they were equal to anything else on the market.  I believe even that critic will be pleased with what will come.  As for what somebody discovered on UTBE by my older son, Robert, all I can say is that Robert was part of the editing family team, and inletting a swamped barrel was matrerial he played with.  Rob has sadly had a series of problems, so it is now just Andrew and I.  Andrew has asked me to do a survey on possible delivery platforms.  One is to sell you DVDs, the usual method.  The other is for you to download each" Chapter" for a cost of a dollar or two from UTUBE.  With UTUBE, all we have to do is edit.  With DVDs, there is only so much time, so, looking at time versus cost, we will probably have to cut material.  Of course, we can always "puiblish "outtakes.  Would you please contact Andrew with your ideas at "andrew@coffeefrom $#*!.com.  I can be contacted at: p.alexander00@@gmail.com

Peter,

For what it's worth,  I think you should allow downloads or stream the content.   That is the easiest distribution method these days and you can handle it all yourself.   Even the DVD is passing away these days.   More and more folks are streaming their content from various sources.

As long as you are using one of the major content management systems for your web site, such as WordPress,  you can easily acquire apps/modules to handle the download or streaming of your content as well as charge for it.   You don't need to be a developer to make this happen.

Since you are retired,  I would suggest that you learn to do the editing yourself.   I learned how to do it in my late 40's.  It isn't that hard.  You can take a class at your local college, if you want.   I learned as part of a time studio class in the local art school.   I learned on iMovie, but I now use Final Cut.    Those are Mac apps, but you can find good Windows apps for not that much money.

While you are at it,  you can also learn to do all the web development yourself to make the distribution happen.   It isn't that hard if you use the right development environment.   I use WordPress running on my own virtual host.    I have used a number of host companies.   I am currently with InMotion.   The are a good WordPress host.

Anyway,  that is all my two cents worth on the subject.

I tend to agree with Mr Elliott's reply.  DVD's are slowly going away…..Either way I am looking forward to the content.  …….and thanks Peter for the reply.  Good luck.

Learning how to do something on my computer does not interest me . I'd rather spend time in my shop or in the woods.
American Pioneer Video still produces and sells DVD's.  They sell a  pile of them, most of which I have.  A reasonably priced DVD , [ issued as they are ready…don't wait for the complete set ]  would sell extremely well IMO.

Good to see you on the ALR site, Peter! I refer to your book all the time, and I'd eagerly invest in any DVD or download you care to produce.

Peter,  Thanks so much for taking the time to respond.  I am a fan of your book and it was a great help in my skill development.

I agree with Mark. I would produce the streaming version. Perhaps, once that is up and running, and you have earned back some of your investment, you could go on to load it onto DVD's for those that would like to have a "hard copy".

I appreciate any craftsmen (and women) willing to put in all the time that it must take to produce these types of products and distribute them for us to learn from. I hope that as information for these types of crafts becomes more and more available, that it will help others to enjoy this passion. We are an aging bunch, and we will all eventually need replacements to take our place.

Hey Folks,  Thanks for your kind and flattering comments.  I will make sure my son, Andrew, sees and absorbs them.  I must apologise - you would think I would know my son's email address, but I screwed up.  The proper email address is:  aa@coffe from $#*!.com  PLease send your ideas re: delivery platfrom to him ASAP.  Thanks,   Peter A. While a set of dvds is something I'd probably purchase, if it was only offered in a download or streaming version I wouldn't look at it twice.

I would prefer a downloaded video or DVDs.  Streaming doesn't let you look up things easly.

Best regards
