What was the purpose of the offset?
The nation that makes great distinction between it's warriors and it's scholars will have it's thinking done by cowards and it's fighting done by fools. King Leonidas of Sparta

Paddlefoot, it allows the ramrod hole to be offset to provide more clearance for the lockplate guts while inletting so there is no breakthrough in the channel

French and English pistols had very strong mainsprings-- thus wide.  I am not sure I have photos of the whole pistol. It might not have been fancy enough for me to save. I'll look
I don't have any more photos of that pistol. I have several other boutet pistols. Boutet made everything from muskets to presentation arms.  In fact he had a couple of thousand people working for him. Surprise huh?
After a certain date he also controlled the arms making in Leige Belgium.

Has anybody seen a fowler with the ramrod off set? Some the early English fowlers have large locks.

The barrels on the fowlers were wide at the breach and the front of the lock was hooked. This way there was no need to offset the ram rod. The rods were also tapered.
